The Calgary Sun -Monday, October 15, 2001 Ludwig's release won't be opposed by WCCC Spokesman says convicted oilfield vandal has 'paid his price' By Sun Media Convicted oilfield vandal Wiebo Ludwig's statutory release from prison next month won't be opposed by a residents' group. ''There's no plans to oppose his release," said Brian Peterson of West County Concerned Citizens, a group representing residents near the Ludwig farm at Hythe. "As far as the bombing and the oilfield and that type of terrorism, I think he's paid his price." Ludwig, serving 28 months in the minimum-security Grande Cache prison for vandalizing two oil and gas well sites and explosives-related offences, is eligible for release on Nov. 14. Hythe-area residents while remaining deeply unhappy that nobody has been charged with the 1999 fatal shooting of local teen Karman Willis, who was joyriding with other teens at Ludwig's farm, say there's no threat of violent reprisals. "People here are unhappy with an unsolved murder but also realize that further violence won't really help that," Peterson said. "In general, he'll be safe. There's no serious threat that I can see." Ludwig's son-in-law Trevor Schilthuis said the family will likely have a celebration to welcome the patriarch home. |
